Facts about Fort Worth
Located in Tarrant County, Fort Worth serves as the county seat. Parts of the city are also found in Denton, Johnson, Parker, and Wise counties. The most recent (2022) census estimate confirms that Fort Worth is home to more than 958,000 people. That makes it the second-largest city in the DFW area, and the fifth largest city in Texas.
Incorporated in 1874, Fort Worth was named in honor of William J. Worth, a US officer who served in three different wars: the War of 1812, the Second Seminole War, and the Mexican–American War. Worth had died in 1849.
While the Civil War, as well as a period of financial stability in 1873, threatened to undermine the city, the completion of the Texas and Pacific Railroad in 1876 reversed Forth Worth's fortunes. The cattle industry, factories, and a number of other businesses were soon established and thriving. Oil discoveries in the early 20th century, followed by more in the 1970s, helped the city to continue growing.
