Facts about Arlington
Located in Tarrant County, is part of the Mid-Cities region of the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. With more than 394,200 residents, Arlington is the second largest city in Tarrant County, and the third largest city in the area.
The city was founded as a station along a line of the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1876. The inspiration for the name came from Arlington House, the residence owned by Confederate General Robert E. Lee in Arlington County, VA. The station grew into a town and farming center. Incorporation took place in 1884.
Arlington is the birthplace of the Amber Alert System. The system was created in response to the kidnapping and murder of nine-year-old Amber Hagerman in 1996.
The University of Texas at Arlington provides a major urban research hub for the state and the nation. General Motors also has a presence in the city, along with Texas Health Resources, Mensa International, and D.R. Horton.
