Facts about Cleburne
Located in Johnson County, Cleburne is the seat for the county. The city was named for Confederate General Patrick Cleburne. The nearby reservoir is also named for the general. As of the 2020 census, the city was home to just under 32,000 residents.
Cleburne is actually Johnson County's third county seat. Previously, the seat was in Camp Henderson and Wardell. The city was first incorporated in 1871.
At the time of World War II, Cleburne was selected for a prisoner of war camp. The camp was set aside specifically for German prisoners of war. It continued to operate for a short time after the war was over.
The city is found on the edge of the Dallas-Forth Worth area. While it was once known primarily as a farming community, it's not considered a bedroom community that provides residential properties for people who prefer to live just outside the larger cities. While not as large as Fort Worth or Dallas, Cleburne is the second largest city in Johnson County, only surpassed by Burleson.
