Facts about Denton
Located in Denton County, Denton also serves as the county seat. The 2020 census confirmed that Denton has a population of more than 139,000 residents, making it the 27th largest city in the state. Considered part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Area, Denton is the 12th largest city within that area.
The origins of Denton can be traced back to a land grant in the early 1840s. By 1846, Denton County was formed. That followed with the establishment of the town of Denton, followed by incorporation in 1866. Both the county and the city were named after John B. Denton, a captain in the Texas Militia.
Thanks to the arrival of the railroad to the area, the city grew rapidly for the rest of the century. Education also played a prominent role, with the University of North Texas being established in 1890, followed by the Texas Woman's University in 1901. The completion of the DFW International Airport in 1974 has contributed to additional growth in the decades since.
