Facts about Flower Mound
Located in both Denton and Tarrant counties, Flower Mound is a town that's northwest of Dallas, and northeast of Fort Worth. The unusual name for the town is inspired by the presence of a 12.5 acre mound that's found at the town center.
According to figures found in the 2020 census, Flower Mound had a population of just under 80,000 people. That was an increase over the just under 65,000 residents identified in the 2010 census. Today, Flower Mound is considered the largest of all the municipalities in Texas that are incorporated as towns. It's the only incorporated town in the state with a population of more than 20,000 residents.
The first settlers in the area began to use what is now Flower Mound for religious gatherings in the 1840s. By the following decade, the first permanent settlers in Flower Mound were in residence. While the community continued to attract attention, no efforts were made to incorporate for more than a century. It would not be until 1961 that Flower Mound officially became a town.
Today, the town continues to enjoy a growth spurt that began when the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport opened in 1974. It retains the feel of a small town, while offering many of the amenities that are associated with larger cities.
