Facts about Decatur
Found in Wise County, Decatur is also the county seat. As of the 2020 census, the population of Decatur was more than 6,500 people. This compares to a population of just over 6,000 in 2010.
The city's history goes back to the middle of the 19th century, when Wise County was established in 1856. The need for a county seat arose, and what was then known as Taylorsville was selected.
However, Absalom Bishop, then a member of the Texas legislature and a resident of the community, was not in favor of the county seat being in a town named for Zachary Taylor, who had been a member of the Whig Party. This led to a name change in 1858, with the town renamed in honor of Stephen Decatur, a naval hero.
Today, the city is home to the The Lyndon B. Johnson National Grassland, which includes several lakes, and mails of trails set aside for hiking and horseback riding. Weatherford College also maintains a branch campus within Decatur.
