Serving as the seat of Dallas County, Dallas is also the largest city in the county. It's also the largest city in what's called the DFW area, which also includes Forth Worth. Overall, Dallas is the third-largest city in the state, after Houston and San Antonio.
Not all of Dallas is found in Dallas County. Portions of the city are also in Collin, Denton, Kaufman, and Rockwall counties. At the time of the 2020 census, Dallas had a population exceeding 1.3 million residents. That made the city the ninth largest one in the entire country.
The area that's now known as Dallas was first surveyed in 1839. The formal establishment of a community followed in 1841. The city was formally incorporated in 1856.
A number of industries are in operation within Dallas, and in the DFW. Some examples include financial and banking services, telecommunications, information technology, defense, and transportation. The DFW is home to 23 Fortune 500 companies, while Dallas proper is home to 11 of those companies.
